Report: Health Care Costs are Rising

June 6, 2024

The Report

The Oregon Health Authority (OHA) released its first annual report  on the state’s Cost Growth Target. The Cost growth Target program was established to hold costs down. In 2021-2022 healthcare costs grew by 3.6%, just above the target number of 3.4%.

Oregon's rising health care costs underscore the urgency of the Universal Health Plan Governance Board’s work to create our new simplified, equitable and affordable healthcare system.

  • Health care expenses in Oregon have been steadily increasing, affecting both individuals, families, businesses and the state's budget.

  • Many Oregonians face higher insurance premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket costs, which place a significant financial burden on families.

In fact, according to this new report, people in Oregon pay more for health care than housing , food or transportation! Health Care for All Oregon is leading the charge for a better way.

The state’s proximity to its health care cost growth targets suggests effective cost management but also highlights the need for a more sustainable and equitable system. A single-payer health care system presents a promising alternative, offering cost savings, universal coverage, and improved health outcomes.

The Oregon Health Plan Governance Board was established to create our new system and has met twice since their confirmation in February.  The UHP Governance Board will meet again on June 20, 2024. They are affirming the principles and focus of their mission. In addition they are developing a work plan, which should include additional opportunities for Oregonians to engage in the progress through active participation in UHPGB Work Groups, public testimony, and monitoring of the Board’s work. You can register to attend the June 20th meeting virtually.
