Help us make key decisions at the May 30 HCAO Annual Meeting
Health Care for All-Oregon will discuss next steps in our campaign for single payer health care in Oregon at the HCAO Annual Meeting Saturday, May 30, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., at the SEIU 503 Ballroom, 6401 SE Foster, Portland. Representatives of many of our 110 member organizations and HCAO activists from around the state will gather to review progress during the 2015 legislative session and to plan next steps.
We are truly at a crossroads in the single payer movement in Oregon. Several strategic paths forward are being considered by the Board, and we are seeking input from the membership on which way to go. Strategic options being considered are:
A campaign to pass a ballot measure creating an amendment to the Oregon constitution declaring that health care is a human right and it is the duty of the state to guarantee that right to residents.
A campaign to pass a ballot measure creating the Health Care for All Oregon Plan for universal, publicly funded health care.
A broad-based and in-depth educational campaign to inform Oregon voters on how a universal publicly funded health care system would guarantee affordable health care for all.
A campaign to get city councils and county commissions to pass resolutions in favor of universal publicly funded health care and/or health care as a human right.
Decisions on next steps by the Board will be based on criteria including (1) results of a March voter poll on the ballot measure proposals (to be discussed at the May 30 meeting), (2) input from our member organizations (including transcripts of discussion at the May 30 meeting), (3) surveying of statewide HCAO advocates (see Strategic Survey in this newsletter, below) and an assessment of whether we have the financial resources to proceed with the various options.
Also on the May 30th HCAO Annual Meeting agenda will be updates on progress on SB 631 (the Health Care for All Oregon Plan), HB 2828 (the Health Care Study Bill) and other legislation supported by HCAO during the 2015 legislative session.
Finally, members will have the opportunity to consider and vote on critical bylaw revisions and a slate of leaders, including the Board of Directors and Officers. Members who wish to make nominations for the Board or Officer seats should contact Glendora Claybrooks (email@example.com) by April 20.
