Today the Supreme Court will make a decision whether Oregonians who now receive health insurance through healthcare.gov can keep their federal subsidies on their premiums. This issue about the wording of the Affordable Care Act is a deplorable political attempt to undermine, if not destroy, the ACA, with the emphasis on the first word. If the Supreme Court decides in favor of this challenge by conservative Republicans, I believe it will be an example of “minority rule”. If the Supreme Court rules against this challenge, at least the improvements in health care coverage brought by “ObamaCare”, such as they are, will continue.
A month ago, more than 1000 people attended a rally on the Capitol Steps in Salem to demonstrate that the idea of single-payer health care is thought to be a better option for the people of this State, as well as for the nation. A recent poll in Oregon revealed that the majority of the people believe that health care is a basic human right. The simplest, most cost-efficient way to ensure that every Oregonian has affordable health care is a single-payer system.
