Report from La Grande
by Bill Whitaker
What a great concert! More than 100 attended. Colton Haney was a wonderful MC. Steve Hines and Friends were spectacular. The chorus of their song "One in Spirit" captured perfectly the essence of the entire evening. "We are one in the spirit. We are one family. And though we come from every walk of life, We are one, you and me."
Their dedication and support was demonstrated again when they contributed back to our health care reform work the $183 collected to support them. Many, many thanks to Steve Hines and Friends!
George Mann met and exceeded expectations as he sang new songs and put old songs in their historical context. George demonstrated the vitality of movement building songs as new verses about health care were added to old favorites. Our thanks to all the musicians for sharing their energy and enthusiasm.
Our thanks to MESA for cosponsoring and making the McKenzie Theater available and for providing enthusiastic volunteers.. Thanks to Eastern Student Entertainment for supporting advertising. Thanks to our many business supporters who helped make the concert possible.
Thanks to everyone in the ORA Health Care Reform Action Team who promoted our event, sold tickets, made brownies, volunteered at the concert. Thanks to the new persons who plan to join the action team! You are all fabulous. Even the malicious insurance company plot (smile) to hold up the concert by putting half of La Grande in the dark failed when confronted by such a dedicated group of activists.
Together we will win the struggle for universal, publicly funded health care for Oregon and beyond. Everybody in! Nobody out!
We don't have final figures yet for the amount of money raised after expenses. However, we grossed $987 Thursday night in addition to money turned in before Thursday. Half of final net proceeds will support our local organizing and half will support statewide organizing. (If you still have money from ticket sales, please bring it to the ORA office as soon as possible.) Good work everyone!
