HCAO Alert! Take action to lower Rx prices in Oregon!
As the health care debate continues to rage in Congress, there is a growing movement in Oregon to reduce the skyrocketing cost of prescription drugs. We are all aware of the problem: prices are increasing double and triple digits. Even insulin cost 300% more than it did just a few years ago. And the blockbuster drugs are coming onto the market at costs of sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Enough is enough! It’s time to stand up to the powerful pharmaceutical industry. That’s why Health Care for All-Oregon is part of a coalition of nurses, pharmacists, doctors, consumer advocates and health plans in support of the Oregon Affordable Drug Prices Act.
As you can imagine, the big drug companies are working hard to stop the bill. That’s why we need everyone to contact their lawmaker and tell them to stand up to the pharmaceutical industry today. Click here to send a letter to YOUR lawmakers.
There are so many stories of drug company price gouging it’s hard to pick just one. How about how Gilead Sciences raked in $18.2 BILLION in profit in 2015 after charging Americans $84,000 for Solvaldi to treat Hepatitis C, while charging other countries $800. Their stock rose 418% while patients struggled to pay for their medications.
Meanwhile, the drug companies spend 50 percent more for slick advertising and consumer marketing than research and development. That’s how they drive demand and keep prices high.
Here’s what the Oregon Affordable Drug Prices Act will do:
- Immediately lower prescription drug co-pays
- Prevent drug company price gouging
- Create a Premium Protection Fund to reduce the effect of drug prices on health care premiums
- Make pricing more transparent by requiring drug companies to finally justify drug prices and report how much they spend on advertising and marketing versus research and development.
Oregon has long been a leader in health reform and we all know nothing will happen at the federal level to lower prescription drug prices any time soon. We have a chance in our state to pass this important legislation but it will take every single one of us reaching out to our elected officials.
