Congregants of Portland’s Augustana Lutheran Church in NE Portland saw an intrinsic link between their spiritual duty to the sick and the movement behind universal health care. In late April, Pastor Mark Knutson and HCAO Faith Caucus member Maria Grumm proposed a resolution to the Oregon Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, a council representing 120 congregations in Oregon, at their annual assembly to officially recognize this religious commitment.
Maria called upon the faith community to “learn about and support current efforts and legislation in our state to bring a universal, publicly-funded health care system to Oregon,” as well as “consider joining Health Care for All Oregon.” The resolution (whose full text can be found here) passed overwhelmingly with 250 representatives in support and only 2 abstentions. Additionally, Maria and prior HCAO Vice President Chris Lowe signed up four Oregon Lutheran congregations who requested a presentation at their church to educate their members about the important work HCAO is doing to bring a universal publicly funded health care system to our state.
Fantastic work, Augustana!
