Letter to the Eugene RegisterGuard 8/23/2015

I am not a PERS recipient.
In response to the Sunday Editorial (8-16-15) titled “Oregon must detoxify PERS”. Detoxify? So now people seeking a decent retirement i.e. to live on 75%of their working income (including social security) are poisonous.
The R-G stated that PERS is going to undermine public services and public support for such services. Yet wages and health care contribute more to the cost of public services. Public services are for the benefit of all. However, it is well known that large corporations are not paying their fair share. Yet, they rely more on public services to maintain the roads to haul their goods, to educate their work force, clean their parking lot run off, inspect their buildings, protect their property, record their deals, etc.
By singling out retirement and omitting health insurance costs the R-G is promoting run away profits for health insurance companies at public expense. These big companies are profiting by charging more than it costs. Yet the profits seen recently in the Trillium fiasco continue year after year at the public’s expense.
The PERS system is a healthy system. There are many ways to adjust the program for efficiency. Public Employee Unions have offered many ways to refine the system. Maybe the R-G should ask them, instead of instigating misdirected rage. All workers should have a decent retirement as good as or better than PERS.
