Given the failure of the U.S. health care insurance industry to provide affordable, comprehensive, equitable coverage for U.S. citizens, most would agree that if you find an insurance plan that provides free annual checkups, cannot be denied for pre-existing conditions, has no annual or lifetime claim limits, and no coverage rescission, you should feel fortunate.
That is precisely what the Affordable Care Act now provides to millions of Americans. It mandates all of those provisions, and more. Why, then, do we hear so much opposition to the Affordable Care Act? Unfortunately, we are constantly exposed to misleading, politically driven assaults on “Obamacare.“
One basis for opposition to the act is fear of any program that is overseen by the federal government. It is strikingly ironic that so many Americans fear government-coordinated health care, yet they are perfectly willing to allow control by private companies whose top priority is not public health, but maximization of their own profits.
